New Orleans is one of America’s best food cities. Don’t argue with me on this one. Like any great food town, New Orleans has a food thing that belongs to just them, po’ boys. Many jokers try to recreate the simple magic of this sandwich outside of their city, and many fail. It’s just a protein on a roll, right? No. A million fried times no.
There is something in the New Orleans air that makes this sandwich perfect, and there are a handful of great places to get a good po’ boy down there. The best place is Parkway Bakery. Couldn’t believe my ears that had been dulled by the usual news on NPR this morning. The day got a little brighter when I heard that the First Family’s first stop in NOLA was at this off the beaten tourist path spot for shrimp po’ boys. Of course I would recommend to kick the order into overdrive and make it a surf and turf (slow cooked roast beef with fried shrimp and roast beef gravy), but I’ll let this error slide as long as I hear that he makes a stop in Acme in Metairie for charbroiled oysters on his way out of town…
